What does antivirus software actually do?

At its most basic, antivirus software scans a computer for viruses by looking at executable file coding and determining whether or not it’s safe. To do this it will scan the computer as a whole and also scan individual files or drives when the need arises. Generally these programs run on schedules set by default or by the user. Usually there are varying degrees of scans as well, usually known as something along the lines of a full system scan or a deep system scan.
